In 1849, during the California Gold Rush, 20-year-old Mathias Alfred Parkhurst purchased 127 acres of timberland on the Peninsula south of San Francisco, and named it Woodside. By the late 1800s, Woodside was home to numerous country estates. The town still retains a rural residential character, though it is a short commute to Silicon Valley. Today, Woodside is among the wealthiest small towns in the United States and home to a number of famous people as well as Koko the gorilla! Everyone in Woodside has their house painted regularly, both inside and out.
