Sliding Door Types

Sliding doors offer many benefits, including sleek design and efficient use of space. With sliding doors, there is no need to accommodate the swinging space required by hinged doors, and sliding doors offer flexibility in terms of the open space they cover. While many sliding doors come in standard sizes, there are varieties made to adjust to different widths – closet doors are a common example of this type of sliding door.

Typically hung with rollers that are attached to the door panels, sliding doors roll along tracks attached to wall openings, top and bottom. Manufacturers of sliding doors supply the requisite hardware for installing the doors, including simple installation instructions. Most contractors are well familiar with this popular style of doors, used in many residential remodels and new builds.

Here are several types of sliding doors:

Glass

Glass doors are ever popular for creating large window-like areas that allow entry to outdoor areas, such as patios and balconies.

Louvered/Shutter-Type

Sliding doors that resemble louvered doors or shutters are often used effectively to cover storage closets.

Pocket

Pocket doors are wonderful solutions between rooms, such as dining room and library, or bedroom and dressing room. The tracks are hung between the walls, so when open, the doors are invisible

Shoji Screen

These beautiful wood and translucent paper doors have been used in Japan for centuries. They are popular in contemporary designs with Asian influence and are particularly effective when opening onto garden areas.

Mirror

Mirrored sliders make small bedrooms appear much larger and offer the added benefit of providing full length mirrors for dressing.

French

Although traditional French doors are pairs of doors that open outward from the center, this elegant style of doors is also available in the sliding style for space saving and convenience.
