Dog Park Goes Solar!

Long Beach, California now has the first “off-grid” dog park in the city. This installation was the first city-sponsored job for the local Solar Source, Inc., one of a few solar installers in the Long Beach area. The park uses 24 high-efficiency LED bulbs powered by six solar panels and harvests enough electricity to keep the lights on for six hours after dusk.

The park’s system makes use of two calibrating charge controllers capable of adjusting to the amount of sun at different times of year. The park’s four batteries are controlled by the charge controllers, which ensure that the batteries do not overcharge.

The park is called “The K-9 Corner Dog Park” and is located at Pacific Avenue and Ninth Street in Downtown Long Beach. Other features are drought-tolerant landscaping, including fake grass, and an off-leash area.
