Good service is hard to find. And when it comes to a new solar power system, longevity is paramount to its success. Compiled here are a few resources to help you find the right solar installer in your own area.
One thing is a must for peace of mind: make sure that your prospective installer is certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). On top of NABCEP certification, the qualifying installer must also be licensed to practice in the area they're doing business in. I imagine that any reputable installer will be more than happy to furnish this information. I certainly would if it were my business.
The Renewable Energy Sources blog ranked the best solar installers in the state of California. The list is based on the amount of requests received by a company - not the amount of systems each company has put in the field.
Residential (<10 kW Systems)
However, you should note that Real Goods Solar recently purchased REgrid, Marin Solar and two other companies. According to the Renewable Energy Blog, "Real Goods is now actually #2 or #3 if you include the projects installed by companies it has acquired.”
Powernaturally.org is a site serves New York state by providing a searchable database of NABCEP certified solar installers. The site does disclaim any warranties as to the work provided by installers found within the site, but since NABCEP certification is rigorous and voluntary, the site trusts that the installer has a “high level of dedication to the field.”
Local.com is a site that functions like an online telephone directory for services. It has a wide array of services offered and is searchable for wherever you live. Of course, this sort of thing means you’ll have to do the screening yourself, unless they’ve been CalFinder certified. Oh, and watch out for the featured listings - these appeared no matter what city you search and I think we all know what the corporate runaround can be like, especially if you end up dissatisfied with the work.
I’ll keep looking for resources for other states for coming blogs. If you know of a resource that ranks solar installers in your state, pass it on! I’d be glad to help get the word out.
