Redoing the Bedroom
Take into consideration the new needs and desires of those who will use the bedroom.
In many cases, changing the bedroom is an important rite of passage that reflects a significant life change. Some of these changes are:
- Buying a new home
- Becoming single
- Getting married
- Having a baby
- Childhood transition from early to teen years
- Adding a studio apartment addition for an aging parent
Because a totally redone bedroom so often reflects a major lifestyle change, the design decisions require careful thought – taking into consideration the new needs and desires of those who will find privacy and sanctuary there.
At its most basic, a bedroom needs:
- A bed and bedding
- Bed tables
- A bureau and/or dresser
- A chair
- A closet or wardrobe
Larger and more luxurious bedrooms will contain the above items and perhaps include:
- A vanity
- A desk
- A sofa or chaise longue
Many bedrooms, from simple to elegant, will include televisions, sound systems, and other entertainment technology.
With all these items to consider, there is also the fundamental room itself:
- Windows and window treatments
So, where to begin? Clearly, the fundamentals come first. Color choices, types of flooring, and window treatments – decisions for these surrounding elements will often dictate the choices for furniture, lighting, and fabrication. In some cases, the furniture will be the point of focus around which new choices are made for all the other elements.
