You’ve decided it’s time to build a new porch or you just want to beef up your existing porch that was built with standard 4x4 posts. Choosing the right porch posts is important with regard to blending with your home’s architectural style.
First, let’s clear up any misunderstanding between posts and columns. Many porches are built with porch posts instead of columns as porch or deck roof supports. As opposed to columns, posts are made with a simpler design and come in various styles. Posts lend a more nostalgic feel to your porch and are seen on many Victorian, cottage style, and bungalow homes. They not only provide roof support they also anchor hand rails.
When it comes to styles you’ll have plenty of choices: heritage, vintage, Victorian, classical, modern, and even square posts with no design. You’ll also find various base and top length configurations as well as a mixture of widths and lengths. If you simply can’t find a style that grabs you, then pencil out your own design and go the custom route.
