Traditional or Contemporary? How About Both…

When a Manhattan couple went in search of a contemporary yet traditional update to their two-bedroom 1960s white-brick high-rise, designer John Saladino was able to give them just what they wanted by simply blurring the lines between the two.

Implementing a gorgeous rug already in the couple’s collection, Saladino creates a warm and inviting living space that still suggests upper-crust class. In order to compensate for the low ceilings and lack of window space, floor-to-ceiling silk panels are hung on two of the walls. Backlighting is added by natural or incandescent light, depending on the time of day.

For a beautiful classical touch, this dining area features neoclassical wallpaper panels lining the wall. An Empire table displays a collection of alabaster ware, suggesting that this space is more for show than for dining.

With a custom-built daybed for seating, this den serves double-duty as a guest bedroom. Built-in bookshelves house the owner’s library, while Roman drawings hang as a focal point on the adjacent wall.

Creating a space of comfort and elegance was the goal for the master bedroom. An upholstered screen spans the length of one wall, forgoing the need for a headboard. Cool blue tones used in varying shades throughout the room help make it a relaxing retreat.

Masking the functional aspects of the home, Saladino designed a luxurious escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
