With over 180,000 potential homebuyers struggling to push their sale through by the September 30, 2010 tax credit deadline, the entire mortgage system has been buckling under the pressure. Luckily, new legislation has been approved that will make everything run a little smoother.
Pushed through the House and Senate earlier this month, the legislation gives homebuyers an additional three months to qualify for the tax incentive and close on their loan. In addition, Congress also approved the National Flood Insurance Program to ensure that buyers in specific flood-prone areas are protected.

As the last few home sales made with the tax incentive trickle through the system, it’s not quite clear what direction the Ohio housing market will take in the coming months. While things appear to be stable—or even improving over the train wreck that was last year’s housing market—experts aren’t ruling out the possibility of another drop in numbers.

Eric and Mary Wilburn had long since given up on their darkly furnished living room, and began spending all their time in their kitchen and family room. However, when Mary won them a spot in The Plain Dealer Inside & Out Redo Contest and a consultation with designers Tim Kempf and Scott Suskowicz, they were more than surprised with the results.

During the cookie-cutter home-buying boom of the early 2000s, David and Stella Fulton were ready to jump on the bandwagon. Already experts at gutting and remodeling old construction (they did so with 6 previous houses), they wanted a simple home that required little more than a moving van and welcome mat. But all that changed in 2002, when they first laid eyes on the Gates Mills house in Northeastern Ohio.
The house, built in 1832, seemed to be the exact opposite of what they’d originally hoped to find. They discovered, however, that the age was deceiving; the house had been immaculately maintained throughout the years. Perhaps the best part was that the remodeling had been completed as projects of past tenants, who added on a master bedroom, sunroom and mudroom to the original structure.
