Some windows, especially casement windows, come equipped with hinges to facilitate the opening and closing of the window. Casement hinges are designed to be hidden within the window frame so that they are not exposed at all to the inside of the home except when open. Casement window hinges are either right hand or left hand depending on which way the window sash swings. It is important to differentiate between the two before buying hinges.
Some double-hung windows may be fitted with simplex hinges. These hinges allow the window sash to be attached on one side while the other side, or counterbalance, is unlocked. This allows the sashes to be opened somewhat like doors for ease of cleaning and fire escape. Simplex hinges were much more common in older, wooden windows.
