Bay windows come in many styles and dramatically alter a room’s appearance. They consist of a combination of three or more windows, projecting outward from the home or apartment wall. This allows maximum light to enter and also provides multiple views. Bow windows are a variation of this theme, using four or five window panels to complete the curved window.
Gaining bonus space for additional light and furniture is the greatest function of these classic windows – the circular shape. This style of architecture dates back hundreds of years but became popular in the 1870s. Victorian style homes and vintage apartment buildings are defined by these Gothic looking windows.
The standard three-angle bay windows stand about 6-feet tall, come with double-hung windows, and project about 2 or 3 feet from the wall plane. More elaborate windows can be found in Queen Ann style homes. They incorporate more multisided windows and are adorned with intricate molding and sometimes a witches cap. These rounded windows are popular for the master bedroom suites, living rooms, and even in remodeled kitchens or dining nooks.
The oriel is a smaller bay window supported by brackets or corbels. This style of design is used as an accent window and does not reach the ground. You’ll find these windows in Gothic Revival buildings or Arab architecture, known as mashrabiya.
