Passive Thermal Space Heating

There are two types of solar thermal space heating: active and passive. This section of Calfinder’s Solar Library will focus on the passive side of that equation. Passive solar thermal heating implies that there are not electrical or mechanical devices used during the collection, absorption, or distribution of solar heat.

Within the realm of passive solar systems there are three ways to collect and distribute that heat: a direct gain system, indirect gain system, or an isolated gain system. All three of these categories, including the different ways to accomplish each, will be discussed in this section of our Solar Energy Library.
