Solid board siding comes from many different species of tree, but most commonly from redwoods and cedars because they resist rot and decay. It can be purchased untreated, treated with water repellant, primed, painted or stained solid board can be applied horizontally, vertically or diagonally and comes in nominal dimensions of 1 inch thick, 4 to 12 inches wide and random lengths to 20 feet.

Depending on how well you care for it, you can expect your solid board wood siding to last from 30 years to the life of the building, depending upon maintenance. You can extend the life by having your contractor seal it well with water repellant before installing, and apply water repellant every two years thereafter. Painting will be required every three to five years. This is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. Proper preparation of the surfaces will prevent you from having to repeat it more often than necessary.

The advantages of solid board siding is its ease of handling, tooling and finishing. Its disadvantages are that it is prone to split, crack, warp and peel, if painted. Solid board siding is also susceptible to termite damage and rot.
