Now gentlemen, settle down. Romantic style isn’t just girly. True, the feminine touch is the key, but masculine elements can be added for a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
This style lends itself to other clean styles, like contemporary or English country. It does well in a single room makeover or throughout the entire house. Romantic style may often come off as frilly and fancy, full of flowers and pink colors. Well, I’m here to tell you that it does not have to be that way. Yes, colors should be soft, but you can forgo the roses and pinks for blues or greens in stripes instead.
Furniture pieces should balance the room. A sofa with pillows facing a pair of overstuffed chairs, a coffee table at the center of the combination – this combination balances a living room. For the masculine touch, one of the overstuffed chairs can carry darker tones. It can be something that says ‘a man lives here.’ It can carry its own fabric pattern or even its own style of furniture. Just don’t go too heavy or dark.
A master bedroom is the perfect place to combine both feminine and masculine pieces of furniture. How about a four-poster bed, a chenille spread, and embroidered pillows? Make the floors hardwood with a jute rug at bedside and a captain’s trunk at the foot of the bed. Now that’s romantic.
Wallpapers and trims are perfect with this style. Don’t overwhelm the room, though, and keep with themed papers that will draw out your color scheme. The same goes for fabrics you use in upholstery, window coverings, and even in accessories like pillows. Avoid heavy fabrics such as leather or tweed-like types. Silk is especially nice, light velvets or chenille can give the soft textures you will be looking for.
Balance your window treatments with surrounding elements. Poofy valances or swaged drapes in solid colors that go with the print in wallpapers or upholstery are nice. Or, use prints in the window treatments and solid, light hues in your other elements. Laces on the windows are a delightful touch.
Accessories like pillows can be mixed up and unmatched, being held together by the color scheme. Other accessories like family photos framed in silver or crystal can be gathered in groups on a coffee or end table. Porcelain or crystal chandeliered lamps are stunning and romantic, either from the ceiling or placed on a night stand.
The romantic style can carry to every room in the house or in particular rooms. The idea is to bring in a little romance by way of colors, lighting, and both feminine and masculine elements. After all, what’s so romantic about being all girly?
