Wood Finished Base Molding, A Beautiful Addition to Any Room

The finish work on a home is what provides lasting character and definition. The quality of the materials and craftsmanship are what determine whether it is a custom home or one that will deteriorate quickly. If you are renovating or building a home, you will want to take all of this into account when choosing your finish materials. Hiring the right contractor is very important, as well, to ensure a quality installation.

Base molding is one of the materials you will be faced with selecting. You have many designs, materials, and sizes to choose between, and deciding which product is right for your application comes down to personal preference and the overall style of your interior design.

The Choice of Wood

You may decide to use wood finished materials for a variety of reasons. Just a few might be that it adds a unique and natural touch, it complements your wood flooring, or you just really want it to stand out from the wall. Whatever your reasoning, it is a beautiful addition to any room.

A Range of Options

When purchasing solid wood or wood veneer moldings, you can choose between ash, mahogany, birch, poplar, hickory, pine, and oak. All of these can be stained the color of your choosing.

Many manufacturers market materials pre-stained for your convenience. However, many homeowners prefer purchasing the raw wood to allow them to custom match the stain to other woods within their home. If you choose to do this, you want to be sure the material is properly stained and sealed before it is installed.

Installation and Finish

Be sure the material is completely clean and dry before treating. You might also look it over for any rough areas that should be sanded. Apply one or two thin coats of stain, allowing it to dry completely between each. After the stain is dry, apply a clear varnish or sealant to protect the wood. Pre-drill your holes, aiming for the center of the material. Attach to the wall with small finish nails. Fill any holes and seams with a matching wood-fill, and then seal with the same varnish you used on the rest of the wood.
