Linoleum has enjoyed renewed interest of late. It was placed on the backburner after cheaper vinyl came along in 1947. But a new range of color options and stronger sealant to protect those nifty colors has brought linoleum back. Linoleum is primarily made from natural ingredients, unlike synthetic vinyl. Also unlike vinyl, it resists fire and its colors patterns aren’t just printed on the surface, but penetrate all the way through.

Pros: Linoleum is made from linseed oil, woodflour, cork dust or pine rosin, jute and limestone. It comes in a huge range of colors. It’s quiet, durable, biodegradable, environmentally friendly, hygienic, and anti-static. Present day linoleum won’t wear down like the old 50’s type, and the glue is better so it won’t pucker up over time.

Cons: Linoleum is porous; it may need to be waxed or polished from time to time. Though it’s strong overall it is difficult to repair.
