Basement Flooring

There are many options for finishing your basement floor. The key ingredients required when making the decision on which floor application to use will depend on how the room will be used, your personal taste, and your budget.

The Benefits of a Sub floor

As you can see there are many flooring options to choose from depending on your needs and budget. However, the most comfortable flooring options involve a sub-floor installed above the concrete floor. A sub-floor will keep the tile, linoleum, vinyl, or whatever flooring you choose away from direct contact with the cold concrete. A sub-floor will make any finished floor warmer and softer on your feet – it will also keep your finished floor dry and, should you have a plumbing leak, the sub-floor will allow your finished floor to dry out. You can install almost any type of flooring on a sub-floor: carpet, linoleum, tile, bamboo, wood, etc.

Spa Comfort Using Radiant Heat

Electric radiant heat was developed for installation under tile, stone, wood, or carpet. Radiant heat systems bring warm luxury to a cold basement and it doesn’t stir up allergens or dust. Because radiant heating, unlike forced-air systems, doesn’t push dust and dirt around the room it leaves the room cleaner – which is great news for those susceptible to germs or allergies. Studies show up to 80% reduction in dust mite populations in houses with radiant heating. And, pets love it.

A Final Note on Basement Floor Finishing

This can not be stressed enough - if you have a moisture problem in your basement you must resolve the issue before installing any floor treatment, especially carpet. It is highly recommended that you work with a licensed contractor to resolve moisture problems. Read more information about waterproofing your basement
