Wallpaper Application, a Fun Weekend Project

Have you found just the right wallpaper to complete your new interior design theme? If you are planning your weekend installation project, here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Thoroughly clean the wall. Carefully remove any previous wallpaper by applying a wallpaper stripper. You can either purchase a chemical stripper or make your own solution of vinegar and water. Score the wall with a wallpaper scoring tool, being careful not to damage the drywall. Let the wall soak in the solution for about 25 minutes before removing the paper. If the paper is stubborn, a steam remover may be necessary. Be sure to completely remove the old glue as well. If any residual is left, it can negatively affect the new paper.

2. Determine if your wallpaper is self-adhesive. Many wallpapers now come with an adhesive already on the back. If this is the case, all you will need to do is to soak each piece in warm water (normally in the bathtub) and then apply to the wall, pressing firmly into place. If the wallpaper does not have adhesive, you can purchase the glue separately. If using glue, apply the manufacturer’s recommended thickness evenly, and press the wallpaper into place. This type can take longer to dry.

3. Carefully measure and cut. Cutting wallpaper should be done very carefully, especially if you are trying to match a pattern. Use a level, and carefully measure one piece at a time. Be careful not to cut too long of a piece as it can disrupt the pattern and make matching more difficult. Many types of wallpaper have a grid-guide printed on the back to help you create straight lines. It also helps to cut over a hard surface such as a board with the help of a straight edge tool.

4. Apply. Whether using glue or a self-adhesive paper, work slowly and carefully. Press each piece evenly against the wall, taking great pains to smooth out any air bubbles or lumps. You can even utilize a small roller tool to ensure evenness. It also helps to wipe a damp sponge over the paper to help it adhere better.
