Recently, we have been discussing the properties of the different varieties of wallpaper. Most consumers don't realize there are so many different options to choose from. In many cases, we select the wallpaper based on how well it fits into our interior design. There are some key differences in the types of materials wallpaper is made out of, and understanding which material is best for your application is important to a successful outcome to the project.
Fabric backed vinyl wallpaper is made by laminating a layer of fabric to a sheet of solid vinyl. The face of the wallpaper is a decorative vinyl, with the backing being a woven or ground fabric textile. Be sure if you are purchasing this type of wallpaper that you purchase the type with the solid vinyl sheet and not the type with a paper design. The solid vinyl is more durable and will be easier to clean; whereas, the paper may not be as protected and durable. Because this type of wallpaper is so durable, it is more commonly used for commercial and industrial purposes than residential.
Installing fabric backed vinyl wallpaper is quite similar to other varieties. Over 90% of wallpapers already have adhesive on the back, but if yours is missing it, you can purchase separate adhesives. If you are applying the new wallpaper over existing paint or vinyl wallpaper, be sure to apply a pre-pasted wallpaper prep and adhesive to the back of the wallpaper before attaching it to the wall. This will enhance the seal of the wallpaper and reduce the likelihood of peeling or bubbling.
