Porcelain is a classic choice for a kitchen sink. Older sinks typically consist of a porcelain coating over a cast iron frame, as you may have noticed if you've ever looked up at a porcelain sink from underneath. Newer versions utilize stainless steel instead. Porcelain sinks have fallen out of favor in new kitchens as more sleek and durable materials like stainless steel have grown in popularity.
Porcelain can be buffed to a beautiful shine but is susceptible to chipping or cracking and can stain or discolor over time. Porcelain sinks come in any style, from single to double bowl to farmhouse and apron style. Porcelain sinks are usually heavy, with metal mixed into the coating for added strength. Despite the tendency to stain, porcelain sinks are very durable, lasting 50 to 100 years as homeowners of older homes may attest. Cracked or chipped sinks can be repaired by you the homeowner or a professional, although the professional job will usually last longer. In either case the sink will have to be repainted with a special porcelain paint to ensure a sealed and lasting repair.
