We need our kitchen countertops! For work space, meal preparation, everyday item storage, eating areas and more. Amazingly though, there are an overwhelming number of material choices for such a staple kitchen item. No mater what countertop you’re looking for, there are some basics to keep in mind before setting your decision in stone… or tile, laminate, concrete, recycled glass, recycled paper, metal or glass.
First, think about budget. No bones about it, the amount of money you are willing and able to spend on a countertop will help you narrow down your choices. Although the lineal foot price for each type of top will vary, some countertop estimates include installation. Manufacturers do this because some materials can only be warranted if they are installed by a licensed professional. Don’t let this deter you, though. Knowing how much a top will cost to purchase and install will save you the hassle of separate estimates. Plus, you’re guaranteed that your countertop will be made and installed properly, or else that manufacturer is on the hook to replace the top and make it right.
The next point to consider is the amount of use the countertop will get in your kitchen. If, for example, you enjoy using your countertop as a cutting board, then you’ll need to look at materials that are scratch-resistant or made for that type of use, like butcher block, wood and stainless steel. If hot pots and pans seem to keep finding their way onto your countertop, consider heat-resistant tops like natural stone, tile or concrete.
Also keep in mind the style and color scheme of the kitchen. Countertops can come in such a wide variety of colors, designs, textures and patterns, but try to stick to a look that will enhance your kitchen. Kitchen countertops are very eye-catching, so you want it to be something that makes a nice focal point, but not so much that it sticks out like a sore thumb. It should complement your floors, cabinets and wall finishings, but not blend in so that it becomes almost camouflaged.
