Stainless Steel Kitchen Backsplashes

Stainless steel has been the material of choice for major kitchen appliances for the past few years. It has also been a frequently chosen material for kitchen backsplashes. There are several important reasons for this, chief among them the facts that stainless steel is extremely durable, stain and corrosion resistant, and environmentally friendly. Usually, a stainless steel backsplash is installed as one solid piece, which offers a further advantage – no grouting or cracks to attract and trap food, grease and dirt. These sheets come in a variety of finishes, including quilted, non-directional, checkerboard, and a variety of diagonal designs.

Stainless steel is commonly utilized for many surfaces in commercial kitchens for a number of important reasons. It is very sanitary because it is non porous and easy to clean. It also handles very high heat levels. Another plus is stainless steel’s flexibility, which enables it to be installed in all kinds of unique spaces. Stainless gently reflects light, which creates the illusion of a larger kitchen space and is attractive with nearly any style of cabinetry and kitchen design.

There are a number of drawbacks with stainless, which make it a better material for backsplashes than countertops. These include the fact that it tends to make knives dull, it often shows scratches, it can be dented, and it can be quite noisy if not stabilized properly with a strong backing. The other common reason is that food, grease and fingerprints all show very clearly, necessitating continual cleaning.

But only a couple of these issues apply when utilizing stainless as a backsplash material – the visibility of dirt and its tendency to dent, but these issues are easily dealt with because food or grease spattered on the backsplash area can certainly be cleaned easily with soap and warm water and if the stainless steel is properly installed with a strong backing, it should not dent. Consequently, stainless steel receives particularly high marks when used as backsplash material.
