Switched dimmers are toggle switches that have more than the two basic, on/off settings. Three-way dimmer switches allow the light fixture to be controlled from two different locations. However, only one of these three-way switches can be a dimmer switch.

Switched dimmers may be single-pole as well. These switches are typically toggled like a conventional switch but have a small slider that controls light levels.

Other types of dimmer switches include knobs and sliders.
