Motion sensor switches are common outside homes, near entryways or garages, and typically, for security reasons. But that is not the extent of their service to the modern home. Interior lights, too, can be programmed to turn on as you enter the room. Motion sensors are a part of the switch plate itself and have a range of several feet.
Typically there will be small controls behind the switch plate itself that allow you to set the duration of time that the light will remain on once the sensor is engaged. Motion sensor switches also have manual switches with three settings—on/off/sensor. The sensor can differentiate between the infrared energy of a human and background space. After a preset time without sensing any human activity, the light will shut off.
Motion sensor light switches cost anywhere from $20 to $80 for the most technically advanced and powerful models.
