Creating Orange Peel Textured Drywall

Orange peel is very popular among finished drywall textures, although only one of several options. Like other drywall textures, obtaining an orange peel look (and feel) occurs by way of spraying a light mixture of plaster onto the taped, finished, and sanded drywall. The size and look of the texture will vary based on the consistency of that plaster mixture.

Applying this texture requires speed. Orange peel texture is also sometimes called splatter because it requires the fast splattering of a very thin mixture on the wall. While a sprayer is not technically necessary for applying an orange peel texture, it expedites the process exponentially and ensures a more consistent outcome.

This texture is so beneficial because it adds depth and substance to the wall surface without being obtrusive or dominating the room.

When attempting to apply the orange peel texture, it is a good idea to practice with the sprayer. Some hang large sheets of paper on the wall or find some other surface. This helps acquire the skill and confidence to complete the job in a uniform manner. Remember that orange peel texture is the lightest of drywall textures, requiring a very light mixture under high air pressure being applied in a rapid motion. The texture compound is available at building supply stores either pre-mixed or as a powder to be mixed with water.
