Decks are the fourth most popular home improvement project, according to a survey conducted by LivingHome.com. Adding a deck enhances your home's value by increasing warm-weather living space, and it's much cheaper than building an actual room addition.

One brand of modular tiles used as decking material comes in porcelain, slate and natural granite. Modular tiles are particularly desirable for decking because it can be laid over existing surfaces, as long as those surfaces are hard, level and smooth. Installation is quick and simple because the tiles are placed by clicking them into position.

There are a number of benefits to using modular tiles for decking. There is no need for surface preparation, underlay, adhesives or grout. Therefore, there is no waiting for adhesives to cure or grout to harden. There are no uneven grout lines or joint spacings. Perfect tile alignment is guaranteed. In addition, tiles that don’t require grout allow fast drainage, which reduces the risk of slipping on tiles. Also, the tiles are easy to lift and replace if they become damaged or stained.

Another brand offers ipe wood decking that snaps together with a patented system that allows for drainage. Yet another offers curupay, (also known as Patagonian Rosewood) which is just as dense and durable as ipe. Curupay wood is sourced from sustainable forestry programs in Bolivia and has a darker grain and beautiful color that darkens to a deep burgundy red over time. Each 1-foot-square wooden tile is mounted on a sturdy plastic grid backing. The grid allows the tiles to snap together like children's plastic building blocks.

The average cost per square foot of a traditional deck ranges around $35 to over $50 per square foot depending on the wood choice. Modular deck tiles cost approximately $10 to $25 per square foot. Once a year, treat them with a wood sealer and ultraviolet light protector. Deck tiles can also be laid in three different designs: traditional, offset or parquet to create several unique looks.
