Choose your Stone

Natural stone comes in various colors and no two pieces are exactly alike. Keep in mind that some stone types, like marble, are especially porous and may not be the best candidate for the bathroom. However, marble, like most materials, can be sealed for extra protection. Soapstone, on the other hand, is known for being extremely dense and resistant to stains. This heavy stone is expensive to ship, but many argue that its unbeatable silkiness and smoothness is well worth the cost. Research various types of natural stone to find the virtues and drawbacks of each, from travertine and slate to limestone and granite.

Composite stone combines quartz, granite, slate, and other forms of naturally occurring stone with acrylic. Composite stone sinks have many of the benefits of natural stone, including hardiness, warmth, and an appealing matte finish. These durable sinks don't scratch easily and come in a huge selection of shapes and sizes. Pricing is competitive with other materials. Color, however, may be limited to neutrals, whites, and grays.

Fireclay is an expensive form of ceramic made from a combination of quartz and feldspar. Its shining attribute is durability. Lasting 30 years and longer, it is far more durable than many competing materials. Fireclay is non-porous and easy to maintain, resisting stains and extreme heat.

To care for and clean these sinks, use a very soft rag after every single use. This will prevent scum from gathering. When cleaning these sinks, use only cleansing products made specifically for granite and marble, or the specific material you choose. Otherwise, these sinks can become etched by the acid contained in most other cleansers. Such easy measures can keep your stone sink looking beautiful for a very long time.
