Broan Mfg., now the Broan-NuTone Group, was born out of the Great Depression, when Henry Broan invented and began manufacturing the Motordor Fan for kitchen ventilation. That singular invention has led to big success for Broan. Also during the Great Depression, J. Ralph Corbett developed a melodious door chime to replace much less pleasing door buzzers. He started NuTone. Over the years, the two companies eventually merged and now Broan-NuTone has a handful of subsidiaries, all dealing in home improvement products, and a market presence across the world.
Henry Broan's original dedication to home ventilation is still the company's main driver and reason for renown. Yet Broan-NuTone offers a far more diverse array of products, including chimes, central vacuums, intercom systems, medicine cabinets, built-in electric heaters, whole-house fans, attic ventilators, paddle fans, ironing centers, trash compactors and speakers. Broan also offers Energy Star rated ventilation fans that come with controls that help improve indoor air quality while saving energy.
Dealers for Broan products may be found all over the world. While headquartered in Hartford, Wisconsin, Broan's employee base stretches over eight countries on three continents, with products available in North America, Europe and China. Distributors include Home Depot, Lowe's, Menard's and a multitude of lumberyards, co-ops, electrical and HVAC distributors and hardware stores. Broan-NuTone is the largest manufacturer of home ventilation products in North America.
The company has also won a host of awards, including the 2009 Platinum ADEX Award sponsored by Design Journal and the 2009 Green Product Award, sponsored by Building Products, for it Broan Ultra Silent Humidity Sensing Fan.
