"Preparation is pretty much the Number 1 thing," Hiram says. "When comparing prices, homeowners might get lower bids, but if they don't get the right prep, it's not going to last as long." Micheles Painting performs the following preparatory steps:

Exterior Prep

• Pressure washing all exterior areas.
• Inspection for loose siding, fascia, or trim. Refastening of these materials as needed.
• Scraping, sanding, and filling/caulking cracks on surfaces. "I noticed a lot of other contractors don't fill holes in trimwork or wood, they just prime and paint. I fill them in and texture anything that needs to be textured."
• Prepping gaps in doors, window casings, and stucco. "We use an elastameric patch on all stucco cracks as needed. And to finish, we prime wherever necessary. Whether it's somewhere we've made repairs or on bare wood, we prime it."

Interior Prep

• Cleaning all the woodwork, doors, and interior areas with TSP.
• Repairing/caulking all cracks around trim, windows, and door casings.

For both interior and exterior work, Micheles Painting is happy to recommend color schemes. "When we test the color, we always recommend at least 3 samples. This helps ensure the customer is completely satisfied. A lot of homeowners, just by looking at a painting sample, think, 'Oh, this looks nice here.' But once you see it on the whole house, you might not like how it looks. If we're painting outside, we recommend the customer goes a couple of shades darker, because outside, it's going to look lighter. On the other hand, if they like the color inside, we might tell them to go one or two shades lighter."

After one consultation with a Micheles Painting consultant, homeowners are always satisfied with the level of honesty, thoroughness, and professionalism they encounter. "We're professional, friendly, honest. We don't exaggerate, we tell them the truth about how it will look. If a house is old or in bad shape to start, we'll tell them it will look 80 percent better, but not 100 percent. We give them a realistic idea of what to expect."  Micheles Painting also gives recommendations and sites options for repair.

With an artistic background painting and drawing in oil, charcoal, and pencil, Hiram naturally approaches his residential and commercial painting in a meticulous manner.
