MGS Properties Inc. is a second-generation, family-owned and operated business that opened its doors in 1986. When Israel Kahaner started the business all those years ago, he already had more than 20 years of construction industry experience under his belt. Today, his son Alex Kahaner continues the legacy of running the company based on honesty, integrity, and superior customer service.
The company focuses on residential projects, including room additions, existing space remodels, kitchens, bathrooms, and green construction. "We do all the rough, structural work in house," Alex says. "We subcontract the finishing touches to subcontractors, who have been working with us for 10-plus years, and in doing so, create a perfect harmony between doing work in house and using subcontractors."
To prepare for a project, the Kahaners spend a lot of time with the homeowner to create a budget and a plan. From there, they move on to selecting materials and getting everything in place with permits, materials, and the overall vision of the project. The company then provides a timeline to the customer, which they make sure to adhere to. "Preparation and communication are the key to a successful home improvement project," Alex says. "We adhere to and live by those two little words." Alex also cites attention to detail, preparation, outstanding customer service, having dedicated and highly trained crews, and proper management as key factors of MGS Properties' success.
With so many horror stories in the contracting business, homeowners tend to worry a lot. However, Alex and his crew address those concerns with a strong emphasis on project scope and clear communication. "We break down the issues and show the homeowner how they're tackled. We have a long list of satisfied customers."
The result is something Alex enjoys most about working in the remodeling business. "I love it when we are at complete harmony with the customer and everything just clicks right. It makes our crews work much harder and the customer in turn is delighted. Of course the final clean up and the last few snapped pictures of the complete project always bring a smile to us and the customer as well."
In addition, MGS Properties has a niche in the green construction industry, where energy conservation and promoting cleaner air is a priority.
"We are learning new technologies everyday to make the world a better place. I am really enjoying this aspect of the business as it makes me feel more accomplished as a person. I want to see my kids and grandkids enjoy the world we live in."
