Smartway Transport Partners is an organization that formed to encourage energy efficiency and decrease the amount of greenhouse gases and air pollution in the transport industry. As we all know, there are thousands of large freight trucks on our highways, and each of these consumes a large amount of fuel while emitting unwanted exhaust.

EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership Program is a partnership between the EPA and the freight industry. Acceptance into the program requires meeting the new standards established by the EPA, and that may involve a fleet upgrade. These standards include installing auxiliary power units, using energy-efficient tires, and incorporating enhanced trailer aerodynamics, all aimed at creating a more efficient, less harmful machine.

There are already 600 businesses involved in SmartWay’s program, and one of the newest to join the eco-friendly family is the Pella Window and Door Company. Pella was accepted by SmartWay because the company is already implementing a plan to improve the environmental performance of its delivery trucks.

As a new member, Pella promises to seek contracts with other SmartWay Partners and create an education program for their employees regarding the new practices of the program. One practice is to eliminate idling while their trucks are parked. Pella is already recognized industry-wide for producing quality windows and doors. With the recent high fuel prices, freight companies were hit the hardest. Truck operators went on strike, and the cost of our goods rose as a result of higher costs. If more freight companies got on board with the EPA guidelines, it would not only reduce carbon emissions released from the large amount of diesel their trucks consume, but should help to avoid the problems we witnessed just recently when fuel prices rose so dramatically.
