As the owner of an older home, I am no stranger to cold and drafty windows. I would love to replace mine, but am faced with the dilemma of wanting to keep the original wood antique frames to preserve the historical significance of the home. I’ll have to admit, however, I was pretty impressed and a bit tempted by this innovative new product. Ever heard of electric windows?
The intriguing concept entails two panes of glass with conductive coating and low-voltage DC electric current running between the panes. The intention is to warm the pane and contribute to the temperature of the room while reducing the amount of heat loss. The glass is called Power*e Glass and is supposed to have an 85% efficiency rating. As demonstrated in the above video, these windows can help reduce your home without raising your utility bills. The system can be powered by photovoltaic panels, converting the sun’s energy into usable electricity to power the wires.
This can potentially be a very inexpensive way to heat your home and to utilize alternative energy. Even if the windows are not your sole source of heat, they can work to reduce heat loss. This will allow your existing system to function more efficiently. These windows can contribute heat to the room just as a radiant heat source would. This glass is already available, currently marketed by Accent Windows.
