Does it really take a year to remodel the kitchen? We’ll you’d be surprised at the kind of roadblocks one can run into on a remodeling job. Did they have to demolish a cement wall? Is the ductwork located in the wrong place for new appliances? Does electrical work need to be done? The problems you might encounter in a complex remodeling job can be overwhelming.

On the other hand, taking an entire year and you’re still not done? That’s a little hard to swallow, or is it? I’ve seen the pros tackle remodeling projects in less then an hour on TV. But we all understand that these shows have teams of experienced workers behind the cameras all moving at light speed to assemble everything required. Then there’s something called video editing, this makes actual time a non-factor, but I digress.

The professional builders and contractors are the ones that should know the answer to this question. They say a reasonable time for this type of remodeling job is anywhere from three weeks to three months. On the outside, six months was even thrown out there as a possibility. Of course there are always other predictable factors that can slow down the process:

1. Too much beer and clowning around.
2. He got in over his head and is waiting to hire a pro, so he can finish the job.
3. This individual has no pressure to finish, as long as some of the kitchen is functioning.
4. He could be planning it this way. It’s not uncommon to slowly transform a room one piece at time.

Last month, the Dallas Morning News spotlighted a Dallas couple that spent 11 months renovating their kitchen. Huma Sulaiman from Bangladesh got her dream kitchen—but she spent 8 months searching for cabinets. They got rid of a popcorn ceiling and scraped the Mexican floor tile. In the end it was a Moroccan-themed kitchen, complete with chrome barstools found on eBay. The kitchen was awarded honorable mention from Metropolitan Home, a swank interior design magazine.
