And You Thought Your Kitchen Was Small?

With a kitchen as cramped as a phone booth, Brooklyn apartment owner Melissa Jun had little hope for culinary bliss anytime soon. But luckily for her (and her sanity), Stefanie Brechbuehler and Robert Andrew Highsmith of the local design firm Workstead were waiting with thinking caps affixed and shirt sleeves rolled way, way up.

Working with a budget of $17,000 (the lower end of kitchen remodeling), the team knew that cost efficiency was a primary concern.  They brought Markus Bartenshlager, a German woodworker, on board to ensure that all their bases were covered.  The first order of business was to increase the kitchen’s counter space.  This was ingeniously achieved by using a wrap-around counter that extended into the apartment’s living room.

Stefanie, a lover of sleek and seamless design, opted for minimalist cabinetry. The doors are void of hardware and can be glided shut with ease.

In addition, ugly peach tiles were ripped from the floor to reveal a simple hardwood beneath.  The highlighting color of the room became gray – a bit of a shock at first, but one that lends itself well to the functional design of the space.  Markus was able to bring all the elements together with careful attention to detail and expert craftsmanship.

Melissa, a designer herself, saved a little cash with steals from eBay (an Ame Jacobsen rotating faucet), vintage French school chairs from an antique fair, and a Fisher and Paykel stove from her local appliance dealer.

With teamwork this tight, surely any kitchen can undergo a similar space-saving revolution.
