Amazing Kitchen Remodel: $1,000 + Two Weekends = Wow!

Yes, it’s true. A kitchen overhaul can be completed for less than $1,000. Jennifer Mitchell, a rather ambitious interior designer, got so into it that she completed the look above in just two weekends! Talk about inspiration.

“As you can see, the floor was Ick!,” said Mitchell. “The cabinets and counters were a snore. The hardware was cheesy ‘brass.’ This was one ugly kitchen.”

Mitchell had this lovely pink-and-green toile lying around, and before she let it take over the place, she chose its green background color for the wall and ceiling paint. The apple green makes the room cheery and seems to expand the small kitchen.

But what she did next is most unusual. The fabric found its way onto the window in the form of a self-sewn roman shade, the fronts of cabinets… and even the refrigerator. Mitchell said she wanted an “eye-popping, over-the-top look,” and I think it’s safe to say she achieved her goal. For those who find the fabric too much, Mitchell suggests using stencils instead. Other touches, such as polishing the existing hardware and fashioning a cornice from foam core, inexpensively changed the kitchen’s style. Or rather, gave it some.

Unfortunately, remodeling our yucky sinks by filling them with decorative objects as a temporary fix is not an option for most of us, but she does have the right idea about using whatever pretty things you have to spruce up a very dull kitchen. Most of the $1,000 cost of this remodel was spent on the butcher block counter for $300 and a laminate faux cherry wood floor for another $100. She figured the rest of the cost of the redo based on the approximate cost of the gratis fabric, carpet and lighting.

Mitchell shows that by going bold with big color, lots of fabric and attention to detail, a little money can go a long way if you’ve got the confidence to try something different.

I thought the design didn’t worked for me and it looked like there’s too much going on when I first saw the picture on the blog’s frontpage. Upon closer inspection, the design looks cohesive and I like it how the fabric added an extra texture to the cabinets. =)
