On the Cutting Edge of Construction…Literally

While some might find this residence in Hiroshima, Japan, an off-kilter design, I’d say it strikes a perfect balance, at least aesthetically. The hard qualities evoked by black cedar and steel juxtapose a freshness derived from open spaces between the levels and 360-degree views. Architect Tetsuya Nakazono from Naf Architect & Design brings to life a structure that is at once a bit askew and eccentric, yet symmetrical and serene.
The two halves house all the standards: on the ground level are the bedroom and a utilitarian bath, plus a tatami room. Above is the living room, dining area and kitchen. Joining the units is a spiral staircase encased in a clear cylinder. The upper level can also be accessed from the middle-level “deck” via ladder.
