US Green Building Council

Earlier this month, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) launched “LEED for Homes,” a voluntary, nationwide green rating system for new homes. Homes that meet certification criteria must meet green building standards such as less energy, water, and natural resource use, reduced waste, and a generally healthier environment. The LEED for Homes reference guide is now near completion, but the pilot version of the rating system, which lists the intent, requirements, and a detailed explanation of standards is available online.

American Soiciety of Interior DesignersNow, USGBC has teamed up with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Foundation to launch similar guidelines geared toward existing homes. The joint program, called REGREEN, is the first of its kind, with the potential to effect major change through existing homes. View a copy of the REGREEN Guidelines draft online, which is intended to be fully reconciled with elements of the LEED guide where possible. See if you agree with the ASID and USGBC principles for what should govern green residential remodeling, and send in your comments, questions, and suggestions! The public comment period will be open through Monday, December 10. Coming from homeowners and earth-conscious consumers, your opinions can make all the difference.
