Thinking Outside the Box: 9 Custom Remodeling Ideas

Remodeling can be a straightforward process, but most homeowners want much more than your ordinary, run-of-the-mill project. This is the realm of custom remodeling, where creativity reigns king (or queen!). Having a quality contractor like Concept Builders helps out a lot when it comes to working out unique ideas, ensuring that the details are attended to, and expecting results that demonstrate quality craftsmanship. I spoke with the company owner of Concept Builders, Don Runnals, about some custom project possibilities, and he provided the following 9 suggestions to get your own creativity flowing.
- Bring the outside in. Many homes have beautiful yards, but you only see them when you are outside. Imagine a little garden area off the bathroom, private, but allowing for beautiful view.
- Use lots of glass, such as large windows and skylights, sliding doors, or French doors leading to the outside (all with privacy in mind).
- Install a fireplace, inside or outside. How about a fireplace in the bedroom or bathroom?
- Just about everybody loves water features (inside and out). Maybe there is traffic noise in the yard; a waterfall can block out that noise.
- There are beautiful shower doors on the market now, but they are expensive. A less expensive feature is a frameless shower door that really changes the look and makes the bathroom look up-to-date.
- Don’t overlook the kitchen – it does not only have to be functional, but it can also be a showplace. One great feature is the faucet over the stove. No more carrying big pots heavy with water from the sink to the stove.
- You can always increase views of the outdoors. Skylights, for example, can really light up a room.
- There are now beautiful counter surfaces on the market and just as beautiful flooring is available.
- In remodeling older homes, I have frequently seen more than one small hallway leading to different rooms. Many times these hallways (or at least part of them) can be eliminated and at the same time increase the footage of the existing rooms.
Thanks, Don, for the innovative suggestions! A faucet over a stove – who knew? Remember, it’s ultimately the homeowner who makes the final decision, so be sure to work with a contractor like Don who is open to your vision.
