The Family-Owned Difference

I recently caught up with the owner of one such business: Alex Kahaner of MGS Properties Inc.

Kahaner’s father opened up shop in 1986. Since then, the company has provided complete renovations and partial remodels to homeowners in the greater Los Angeles area, operating on a model of honesty, integrity, and outstanding customer service. “We are here to service the customer – that is our first goal,” Kahaner says.

In this environment, 9-5 is less of a reality than constant dedication. Kahaner mentions working long hours and putting in a lot of overtime. “When you are working with and for a family, you have to work twice as hard as for a boss.” Because of this strict worth ethic, Kahaner believes homeowners who go with their company have less problems with their remodel jobs in the long run. “We listen more than we talk. We use good quality materials and tools, which leads to better quality work.”

The company works with subcontractors, and Kahaner understands that this process comes with risks. To offset this, MGS Properties hires subcontractors who have “a black belt in their trades.” They’ve used the same subcontractors for over 10 years and essentially, integrated them into their family’s team. “They have grown with us together. This leads to an excellent working environment. The quality of the work goes way up as well.”

When you work with a second-generation, family operated business, you also gain the benefit of old school values mixed with modern sensibilities. Kahaner learned from his “papa” to visit the jobs on a daily basis, and he brings his own values to the table as well. “I try to keep up with the technology, which streamlines our business. We are also working hard around the clock to keep up with green construction and energy conservation.”
