A remodel project encompasses so much! It definitely helps to have an organized project from start to finish, and to know what to expect at each point along the way. Apart from taking before and after pictures, what else can you do to properly prepare?
Preparatory Steps. Before you do anything, you need to have a detailed plan that outlines the whole project from start to finish. Essentially, you will be the project manager who needs to be well aware of what should be happening when and where. This plan should include at least the following items.
- The first step is to obtain a set of plans. Either draw them yourself or sit down with a contractor or architect.
- Next, put your plans out to bid. Request at least three estimates from certified contractors. Select your contractor based upon price, reputation, and professionalism.
- Once you’ve selected your contractor and know his start date, it’s time to make sure the project is as prepared as possible for him. Avoiding too much of the heavy demolition, do your best to remove any debris that will be in his way.
- Submit all applications for permits, and make sure they are ready to go by the time your contractor is ready to start.
- Finally, discuss with your contractor which materials he is going to bring and which you need to shop for. Have your part done well in advance and the materials ready to go.
Finishing Steps. The finish line is in sight, isn’t it hard to believe you’re finally to this point? Just as though you were completing a marathon, you have to keep putting one foot in front of the other until you cross that illusive line. Then, that relaxing euphoria of completing something really worthwhile will set in. Some of the final steps include the following items:
- Before you pay your contractor his final payment, you want to make sure he is completely finished and no small details have slipped through the cracks.
- The inspection process is an important part of your project, and will assist you in feeling confident that your contractor has done everything he is supposed to. Once you receive that final green stamp of approval from the building inspector, you are officially done.
- Any sort of building project will include a certain amount of mess along with the progress. Once your house is clear of construction workers, either hire a professional cleaning crew, or give your house a thorough cleaning yourself. One way or another, you aren’t completely finished until you’ve removed all of that pesky dust and debris.
- Don’t forget to call your insurance company and get your home reassessed to include the improvements. You don’t want all of that effort to be wasted in case of fire or theft.
There is no reason why your remodel project can’t run smoothly and be a rewarding process. Request your free estimates today from certified contractors.
