As a mother, I can let you in on a little secret: we appreciate any little token of love and thoughtfulness from our spouses and children, but we adore gifts that can make our everyday lives a little easier or more pleasant.

For example, last Mother’s Day I came home to find that my husband had gone to Costco and done all of the grocery shopping for me. This wasn’t actually his Mother’s Day gift to me, but here’s a hint – I don’t actually remember the gift, the errand I didn’t have to run that day is forever emblazoned in my mind.

Mother’s Day does not need to be a holiday for breaking the bank; in fact I’m sure most moms feel like me and prefer a gesture that shows how much our family appreciates us and know us well enough to get something we can truly find joy in. One of my most memorable Mother’s Day dinners out was the time my husband barbecued and my boys cooked the rest of the meal and I didn’t have to go out or cook or clean. In fact, some of the best gifts ever don’t even have to cost a penny. Naturally, some do, but if you’re going to spend money on mom, think about what it is she truly enjoys.

Here’s some great advice for gift-giving for mom – the basic dos and don’ts:

Don’t Do
Give mom a new vacuum cleaner or mop. Have the entire family spending the day cleaning the house.
Buy mom flowers that will quickly die. Get her a new pot for transplanting her favorite plant, buy a perennial or help out in the garden.
Get mom another book she doesn’t have time to read Install shelving to help reduce clutter around the house.
Present mom with some funky new art. Have some of the photos mom’s been saving in a pile somewhere framed for her.
Invest in an expensive day at the spa for mom. Remodel or redecorate the master bathroom so that it’s spa-like at home every day.
Purchase an outfit you think mom will like – And NEVER EVER guess at her dress size. Install an organizer in the closet or some sort of system to help keep it neat.
