Why We Decided to Sell

craftsman.jpgWhen my husband and I went shopping for our first home a few years ago, it didn’t take us long to fall in love with a small, 1910 craftsman in the historical district of downtown. We loved the simplicity, the little unusual character traits, and the amazingly tall almost 100 year old trees in the yard. We excitingly purchased the home, and went to work renovating and restoring it to its original beauty.

Blinded by the charm and uniqueness of the older home, we failed to plan ahead to when our family would grow to include children. A short year later, we were joined by a robust baby boy. Before we knew it, he was energetically cruising up the dangerously steep stairs, bumping his little head on the hardwood floors, and tripping over the cobblestone pathways in the backyard. We soon realized that our charming little home was far from “kid-friendly.” When we learned we were expecting our second child last January, we decided it was time to start thinking about finding a larger home to accommodate our growing family. Due to its age, our upstairs is too remote and dangerous to accommodate small children, leaving us with a nursery and master bedroom combined into one.

While we were occupied with fixing up our little home, the economy took a dive, and the housing market went belly-up, leaving us with the predicament of trying to sell our home in a difficult market. We don’t have a dismal outlook, but simply realistic expectations. We know if we are patient, our chances of selling will improve by spring of next year. The important thing for us and other homeowners to remember is that real estate is more of a long-term investment. The market will recover, we just have to be patient. In the meantime, we are going to continue to make our home as comfortable and attractive as possible; investing in our future.

    Hi Anne,

We’re in the exact same predicament as you and other homeowners as well. It’s not fun and I think the best thing you can do is hold on and be patient like you suggested…

    Hi Dean,
It definitely caught most of us off guard! The “experts” say real estate is a better investment over a long period of time. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
