Did you know that your choice of when to do your project could significantly affect the entire experience? It’s true.
Nearly all home improvement work is somewhat seasonal - for example, very little exterior painting happens during the rainy season, whereas if you decide on Memorial Day weekend that you want your house painted by the Fourth of July, you’re going to have a lot of trouble finding a qualified painting pro who isn’t fully booked. On the other hand, the rainy season is an ideal time to spiff up your home’s interior with fresh paint.
Most exterior work roofing, landscaping, window installation, painting, etc. can’t go on when it’s raining, so contractors are busiest when it’s least likely to rain, usually around May-November in the Bay Area. If you’re willing to live with the occasional weather delay, December-April might be a good time to beat the rush.
Very few people choose to remodel their kitchens around the holidays because of the social whirl, so if you’re not planning a big party around that time, it may be the perfect time for your project.
During the slow periods of the year, contractors are anxious to keep cash flowing and crews busy to avoid having to lay off quality workers and perhaps lose them to a competitor when demand picks up again. This can really pay off for you.
By working with a contractor during the less busy season, you’ll probably get much more personalized attention to your project than at the time of year when there aren’t enough hours in the day. Instead of dealing with a harried professional racing from job to job, you’ll have an expert who’s truly focused on dealing with the unique issues of your project.
In addition, waiting for a slower time of year to schedule your job allows you to spend more time thinking through the details and figuring out exactly the result you want, thus avoiding costly last-minute changes of heart. It’s a true win-win: your contractor truly appreciates the off-season business, and has the time and energy to give your project the personalized attention it deserves.
