Thanksgiving Tables for Sharing the Feast

Thanksgiving will be here November 27th, and people hosting the feasts this year are getting into the fun of planning for the big day. Thanksgiving has always been one of my most favorite holidays – largely, for the simplicity of it. It’s all about family, friends, and food! No costumes to come up with… no gifts to purchase and wrap… no eggs to color or hide. All those things are wonderful fun when it’s their time, but ah! the delight of letting love and gratitude have center stage, celebrated with our dearest people and a wonderful meal. That’s a lot to be thankful for.
Setting the table for the feast can run the gamut from simple to elaborate, depending on what works for you this year.
- How many people are on your guest list? What age groups need considering? All adults, or a mix of adults and children? How many children?
- Will it be a day or evening gathering?
- Will you have guests in for the long weekend who can help you with all the preparations and clean-up? Or will you be doing most of it yourself?
- What’s your budget for the feast and frills for the table?
Once you’ve determined these primary considerations, you’ll have a lot of insight into the kind of table setting that will best serve you and your guests this Thanksgiving. Here are some examples to inspire you:
Country Living has a wonderful slide show of 31 pictures, showing a range of table settings, place settings, and centerpieces. You can easily veer off into the recipe section, too, if you’re looking for some new dishes to add into the traditional mix.
HGTV’s feature on Special Thanksgiving Table Settings begins with, “Sure, we all know that the turkey is the star of Thanksgiving dinner, but a beautiful centerpiece always makes a meal feel more special.” You can flip through a picture gallery of ideas and watch how-to videos at HGTV: Thanksgiving Table Settings.
DIY Network shows a range of Thanksgiving tables from old-fashioned country to traditional. Host Sharon Anderson meets with designer Craig Olson for some creative ways to bring personality and style to table settings.
Epicurious, “for people who love to eat,” has a really creative range of easy do-it-yourself centerpieces, place cards, and napkin holders to complete your Thanksgiving table.
Setting the table, no matter what style you choose, is like setting the stage for the warmth of the Thanksgiving feast itself. Enjoy it in good health, with those you care most about.
