Taking Design to Bed: 6 Beds that Will Rock Your World

For an unusually sound night’s sleep, crawl into one of these distinctive concept beds. No design has ever meshed with modern lifestyles quite like these.
#1 – Floating & Suspended Beds

Believe it or not, makers of the floating bed (top), pictured in a New York City loft, and the suspended bed (bottom) both claim that their products are totally stationary. Bernstein Architecture’s Floating Bed comes with cables that can be loosened for a sway or two, and each Housefish Suspended Bed is uniquely constructed, signed and numbered for only $2998.
#2 – Scoop!

The Scoop!, available from Saba Italia, pulls apart at the midsection to create two sofas, then pushes back together again for a good night’s sleep. The scoop on this concept bed is that Guido Rosati designed a style for spatial boundaries. The living area can now entertain a sleeper sofa without all the uncomfortable springs and wooden beams associated with it.
#3 – Bookcase into a Bed

Downsizers never had it so easy with this unique bed and storage solution. Designer Karen Babel combined the two with wall-mounted shelves surrounded by decorative mattresses. Up by day and down by night, the bed forms either a single or double sleeping space.
#4 – DOC Sofa/Bed

The energetically colored DOC Sofa Bed does a somersault and even turns itself inside out to accommodate your nighttime needs. A built-in mechanism transforms the couch into a bunk bed with ladder and side rail.
#5 – Float

This metropolitan bed travels the country or abroad ecologically. Max Longin designed the furniture to come unassembled and form a box that houses the bed’s other pieces. The mattress’s unassuming design is held up by wooden supports that bend with stainless steel at each intersection. And plush never slept so well.
#6 – Bed Up!

And speaking of up by day, this furniture doesn’t just transition from bed to bookshelf. It changes from sleeping space to home office at sunrise. Counterweights make raising the bed easy. The one pictured above is ceiling-mounted, but the mattress and frame can also be fastened to a load-bearing wall – a good thing, since a bed hovering over your head isn’t exactly the brightest idea.
