Where Water Meets House: Modern Houseboat Living
From Margaret on December 16th, 2010 in General Remodel
Historically, houseboats have been an ideal dwelling for fishermen, sailors, and those who love the water so much they can’t abide the thought of planting feet on dry ground. Yet the modern take on this floating home has grown into an unconventional setting for permanent settlement and lux living.
Take a look at these houses that seem to float on more than just water—oh yes, they’re buoyed up by great style and innovation.

Called Silverfish in German, this boat is starkly modern and innovative in this softer setting.

Check out the sleek and efficient interior. What few items occupy the space are curved and free-formed like water.

There’s even a rooftop garden for a bit of greenery and lounge space.

Here’s Ballinger & Co’s Metro Ship, “the original modern houseboat.” Sleek and sailable, and stunningly prefabulous.

A look at the interior—rich and warm, yet subdued and laid back.

This Watervilla De Hoef, designed by Waterstudio, redefines the term floating home into something new entirely. Floating on a prefab foam-and-concrete base, the structure can be cut into existing canal banks or placed in ordinary suburbia.
