As with every holiday, most of the fun is getting ready for it. That is absolutely true for Halloween. It’s only days away, but it’s not too late for all the laggers out there to get into the spirit. Even if you don’t have a pumpkin, you can light up the inside of a paper bag with a candle held in place with sand. Get creative with what you’ve got in the house! Whether you want to keep it simple or go all out, it only takes a little time and ingenuity to decorate your entryway or front porch. For those of you who could use the last-minute inspiration, here are 3 great resources from the web.

  1. Martha Stewart Living. Always known for her over-the-top treatments of a theme, Martha Stewart has done a great job of it this year in October’s Martha Stewart Living magazine. Promising “Frightfully Good Times,” the issue conjures up everything from glow-in-the-dark decor to desserts that are “charmingly creepy.” (I don’t know about you, but I don’t want spiders crawling up my cake, even if they are fake. Lots of the other ideas are priceless, though.) Her website is loaded with other ideas that aren’t featured in the magazine.
  2. About.com’s “Outdoor Halloween Décor.” Some great examples for porch and landscape displays were put together by Lisa Hallett Taylor for About.com. She says, “Whether it’s a Halloween porch, Halloween yard, Halloween patio or Halloween balcony, you’re going to have to show your (evil?) spirit with a creative outdoor Halloween display. Giant inflatables are fun, but how about combining black foliage and other unusual plants with pumpkins, gourds, fall flowers and spooky props?” There’s a gallery of 21 photographs sure to please those who favor elegant creepiness.
  3. Grandin Road’s Halloween Haven. You must check this out if you’ve missed it. Here you are invited to take a grave approach to your decorating, and you’ll find fabulous, affordable stuff. The staked yard ghosts are pretty cool, and there’s a life-sized, cloaked grim reaper, too.

Happy decorating!
