Installing a Fireplace

FireplaceFireplaces, nearly as old as civilization itself, have moved beyond simple function and on to adding warmth and elegance to the modern home. That being said, there are several concerns for a homeowner looking to install a new fireplace. Most new fireplaces come as prefabricated units, which can make installation easier and cheaper, but are nonetheless full of important considerations.

First, decide where the fireplace will be located and then whether a gas or wood-burning fireplace is right for your home. Bear in mind the high possibility of the added work of building a chimney for a wood fireplace. Gas fireplaces need considerably less venting because they are not providing draw for the fire. There are several different designs for both types of fireplaces.

If you are using the fireplace to warm your home, consider installing a gas fireplace as they are more energy efficient and provide more warmth. While it may require more work to get started, however, a wood fireplace is both decorative and supplies the relaxing crackle of flames.

Because health and fire hazards are a serious concern when installing a fireplace, it is highly recommended that you hire a professional contractor to do the work. A professional can also help you decide which fireplace is right for your specific situation. There may also be specific building and safety codes to adhere to when installing a fireplace, so be sure to contact your local building department.

If you are replacing an old fireplace with a new model, have the chimney cleaned and inspected for leaks and other problems. A leaky or blocked chimney can release dust and noxious fumes that can cause serious health problems for you and your family. In addition, the chimney for a wood-burning fireplace should be at least 15′ tall to provide enough draw for your fires.
