Building an Addition - Should You Bother?

Thinking about building an addition? If so, chances are you’re looking to build a new family room. Studies show that the rate of return on a family room addition is 83 percent - not quite as profitable as landscaping, kitchen, or bathroom remodeling, but still a worthy cause.

General contractor Kenny Dahl of KTD Construction says that in his experience, the addition is more popular than the room conversion. This is primarily because the addition enhances homeowner lifestyles by increasing their living space. Dahl also gets more requests to build out, or lengthen a home, rather than to build up. “However, both methods are equally favorable,” he adds.

Additions frequently occur toward the back of the home, and a family room is an ideal scenario for this location. Other popular additions consist of extra bedrooms. While some home types, like Ranchers, are particularly conducive to the addition, Dahl says no home type should be excluded from the possibility.

“I think every home type can be steered in the right direction for a practical and efficient addition. When a homeowner works with me, I can tell them what it’s going to look like and consult with them on a roof design, for example. Some additions look ugly; preventing this depends on the architect, or planning process.”
