I did not know that fences were uniquely American. I have asked eighteen friends and colleagues, and none of them knew either. By extrapolation, I would suggest that no more than one in twenty people are aware of this reported fact. Further, I might add that all the friends and colleagues whom I asked hold a strongly opposing view. In the circumstamstances I must request that you cite the source of this information, without which one must have serious doubts as to its veracity.
