Redwood Decks

Not only is redwood one of the most beautiful woods you can buy, it also one of the most durable and has characteristics that make it resistant to shrinking, warping, and checking. The soft wood has a natural resistance to decay and insects to its core and not just superficially. It also has little pitch or resin, which means that the wood can retain all types of finishes. Redwood comes in several grades which vary considerably in appearance and quality; the color will vary from a light red to a dark reddish-brown, though if it is not maintained it will eventually turn a driftwood-gray.

Because it is a soft wood it may scuff or dent easier than pressure treated lumber or Ipe, though when properly maintained a redwood deck can last up to 50 years or longer.

Estimated Cost of Redwood: $1-$2/linear foot; $18-$35/square foot
